College of Science and Mathematics

Center for Science and Mathematics BrochureThe centerpiece for the College of Science and Mathematics' efforts is the proposed new Center for Science and Mathematics and the adjacent Centennial Park. These projects will transform the look and feel of the campus and influence the way we teach and learn. The new center will replace building 52, the outdated science facility. The Center for Science and Mathematics will become Cal Poly's largest and most innovative structure, and the Centennial Park Cal Poly's defining and distinctive landmark.

The Center for Science and Mathematics will exemplify the effective use of technology in classrooms and laboratories, support the incredible partnerships of our faculty, staff, and students in creative activities and undergraduate research, and house special programs and centers in environmental biotechnology, polymers and coatings, and science and mathematics teacher education.

It will be an inviting building with artwork, displays, and alcoves where students can sit, talk, and learn about science and one another. The Centennial Park will have grass, trees, mountain views, artistic and cultural areas, special learning environments, places for quite reflection and small group conversations, and a place of extraordinary comfort and beauty. These are the concepts for a space that will become Cal Poly's defining landmark.

How can my giving help? Where might my funds be used?

The Center for Science and Mathematics will house classrooms, laboratories, offices and other facilities for Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics. It will embody our values in teaching, learning, and personal development. You can help by contributing to the building itself, donating up-to-date equipment, or by supporting the educational activities of our college.

The Center for Science and Mathematics will be partially state-funded. Private support will provide the extra margin of excellence that is characteristic of great universities. Your support will greatly enhance our ability to build an innovative and modern facility. Additionally, there are several parts of the building that do not qualify for state support and must be built completely with private funding.

Other Opportunities

  • Scholarships:
You can recognize achievement and financial need of our students through donations at any level to the general scholarship fund for the College of Science and Mathematics or for particular departments or major programs. A named scholarship endowment can be established starting at $10,000. Scholarships are a special need of the College, a thoughtful investment in the future, and they are greatly appreciated by our students.

  • Student Research:
Cal Poly has always been known for the senior project. Our students have excellent credentials, their abilities in creative ventures, and the increasing expectations of employers and graduate schools for research experiences have caused us to focus much more energy on undergraduate research. We appreciate more than ever before in our history Cal Poly's rich tradition of "learn by doing education." You can support partnerships in applied research between our faculty and students with donations to specific departments or projects or with a named endowment.

  • Faculty Development:
The professional development of our faculty is a critical to the success of Cal Poly and a continuing budget challenge. The faculty can be supported by general donations for specific faculty members or departments or with endowments starting at $10,000. Distinguished recognition of a named endowed professorship is at least $500,000 and an endowed chair is $1,000,000. Recently the College of Science and Mathematics has been honored with a total of three million dollars in donations toward endowed chairs and professorships two of which have already been established, the Arthur C. Edwards Endowed Chair for Coatings Technology and Ecology and the Unocal Chair for Environmental Studies.

  • Equipment and Technology:
Cal Poly is known for the uncommon experience undergraduates get with modern and sophisticated equipment. It is a constant challenge to stay current and cash or in-kind gifts from friends and alumni are most appreciated.
